I have been listening to Boldy James since the Cool Kids featured him on Tacklebox back in the summer of 2010. He is most times rapping in a Detroit Drug Lord perspective, living in the Motor City jungle as a Concreature, trying to survive. Songs like "300 Fences" is a movie in itself, Boldy brings you behind the veil of the underworld. The best rappers write raps that come to life like a Picasso painting. Boldy has been on the grind for years. Early on, Boldy was signed to Nas' label Mass Appeal. Although he was signed to Mass Appeal, his music seemed to stay underground not really catching any commercial success. Boldy's cousin, Chuck Inglish, produced a lot of his early music. Matter of fact, The Cool Kids' biggest hit, "Black Mags," was originally supposed to go to Boldy. Chuck brought James out to Los Angeles where he and Alchemist first met; becoming a pivotal moment in Boldy's career. Alchemist became the battery in his back, turning into a long-term collaborator, producing beats that are custom-fitted like a new era on Boldy's grimy-dope-peddling bars. The pandemic, or should I say bandemic, was a good time for Boldy, dropping classic after classic like there was no tomorrow. His persistence and resilience was shown when he got in an life-altering car accident back in 2022 that almost left him paralyzed from the neck-down. This concreature showed he can't be stopped by anything, dropping projects during and after his car accident. My 1st Chemistry Set (2013)

This is Boldy James' first project with Alchemist shortly after they met for the first time, which is why the project is called "My 1st Chemistry Set". This album is very slept on, mainly because the album was released early on in his career while he was still building up his following. When you dig deep into his catalog you will find this piece of gold. With hindsight being 2020, this project showed a quick glimpse of what was to come from Boldy. With early features from Action Bronson, Vince Staples, Earl Sweatshirt, Freeway, etc., he is rapping with the best of the best and holding his own. 

Manager On McNichols (2020)

Probably my least favorite on this list, strictly because of the beat selections. But if you are looking for elite-level bars, you are in the right place. He starts the project rapping with almost a sense of urgency, putting you in a dope-rap psychosis. Manager on McNichols has a ambiance of treachery and heartbreak from a first person perspective. The album's recording process lasted over 10 years, a lot due to the live jazz instrumentation infused into the production. Nearly 20 Detroit musicians contributed to the project. Boldy raps in unique pockets, showing his versatility on beat selection. Manager On McNichols is definitely an integral part of James' catalog, due to being his most vulnerable album to date. 

The Versace Tape (2020)

I would say this was probably the most surprising team-up I ever seen. Jay Versace the social media influencer from the Vine days, teaming up with Concreature Boldy James was not in my bingo cards, but fuck it we are here. Jay Versace's production was actually very impressive on this project, with excellent sample selections. It's hard to associate this production with a silly social media influencer, but I got to give credit where credit is due.

Penalty Of Leadership (2022)

Fresh off recovery from his major car accident that broke his vertebrae, Boldy drops one of his hardest projects to date. This tape was like Kanye West rapping with his jaw wired-shut on "Through the Wire", or like 50 Cent coming back after he got shot 9 times. The shake-back is real. Everybody loves a good come-back story, and the raps don't disappoint, neither did the production supplied by Nicholas Craven. 

Bo Jackson (2021)

One of my favorite tapes from Boldy James. Alchemist does his usual, sinister beats, with drug-trade bars. Boldy is dope in two sports like Bo Jackson. The camaraderie amongst Boldy and Alchemist is prevalent throughout the project, collaborating for over a decade creates that sort of atmosphere. You can tell Alchemist is one of the best A&R's in the game, bringing Boldy to some of the best emcees in the rap game; like Benny the Butcher..... Alchemist's studio is like a rap boot camp, rapping against the best rappers in the game. Boldy James raps gravitate towards it's listeners because the bars are so vivid with a deep voice that sounds like someone that's seen some horrendous things transpire. Alchemist becoming known for his production he did for Mobb Deep, grimy New York beats, it makes sense that Boldy and him mesh so well.

Real Bad Boldy (2020)

Boldy dropped bombs all 2020, this tape is no different. Teaming up with Alchemist's cousin Real Bad Man. Real Bad Man, also known for his streetwear brand under the same pseudonym, gave us another Boldy classic. I highly recommend the Sade mash-up album, ADU, if you like this tape. Real Bad Man provides a dark/sinister ambiance that Boldy specializes in. The dark atmosphere gives you a feeling of driving through Gotham's underworld from a villain's perspective. Boldy is the underworld's orator, a master class in story telling. A street rapper's success depends a lot on if the listener believing in the rapper's words laid within the bars as well as the rapper's personal life.
