Spiral Staircases

Larry brings the melodies while Curren$y brings the effortless bars about getting high while building an empire. The amount of songs they have featuring one other can fill up at least an album or two. Curren$y know how to adjust his flow to whoever he collaborates with like a chameleon. Together, Spitta Andretti and June is like the sensei and pupil sparring at the dojo. These two contemporaries have mastered the independent blueprint, showing rappers can get  rich without a major label backing you.

Curren$y and Larry June have both tried the major label route, with no luck. Spitta was not only signed to No Limit, but to Young Money/Cash Money imprint as well; so Curren$y knows what you’re signing up with label deals. Larry June was signed to Atlantic but eventually left the label. With the streaming era and Hip-Hop genre declining in recent times, many speculate that rap money is evaporating before our eyes. Many rappers are hopping into other industries. Streaming a song gives artists pennies on each play. The independent spirit seeps through their music, giving listeners a benefit of motivation throughout the day.

The wait is finally over. The Avengers of Lifestyle Rap: Larry and Curren$y have been teasing fans for years about a collaborative project in the works. There was a slight scare that this project was never coming out after the Freddie Gibbs and Alchemist project came out with Freddie dissing Curren$y. Spitta did an interview addressing the situation, stating to XXL Mag the termination of his friendship with Alchemist:

AL solid. He neutral. He make the beats. So, it ain’t no G-Code with bro. I ain’t tripping off that. But with that being said, I can’t get in the car with you because I know for sure what I can’t expect.

So late last year fans thought Curren$y and Alchemist were not working together for the forseeable future.

Despite the behind-the-scenes drama, the long-awaited project finally came to fruition. Spitta and June came together like Voltron on this project. The 7-track album got some heat, but I'm not going to lie, there's a couple misses on it.Waiting this long for the project probably gave listeners unrealistic expectations of how Curren$y and Larry June would sound like on an Alchemist-produced album. I honestly would give it a 5/7. The project only has 7 songs on it, so it’s easy to fuck up. There is no room for fluffer songs when the album is that short. With the album being produced by the elite producer Alchemist, the production could have been better. Songs like, “Stars on the Roof,” and, Empty Pages”, give you the classic duo going back-to-back with bars. The album’s ambiance is very laid back so a lot of bars can go over your head.

Even though it only has 7 songs, The project still feels complete. Larry June drops his usual gems like he did on “Stars On The Roof”:

She gon' fuck right now and she done fucked before

Once you get that through your head, then you good to go

With Curren$y teaching Larry how to hone his smooth style, he sticks to his usual formula of rapping about his daily dad activities:

Ralph Lauren garments on a casual mornin'

Stormin' Norman Schwarzkopf, off-road with the doors off

Huh, right where the cars got stars in the roofs

Or they don't park, you can't roll with us, you not that raw

It’s always exciting to see the Avengers of Lifestyle Rap come together on a collaborative project. Spitta and Larry have been teasing a potential project for years now, and it’s finally here:
